Biographical Information

(American, 1930-2018) Robert C. Jones attended RISD in the 1950’s (BFA, MS) and studied under the abstract expressionist Hans Hoffman during the summer of 1952. It was at this point in his career when his focus shifted from realism to abstraction. After receiving his BFA from RISD, Jones served in the army from 1953-56. Returning to Providence RI, Jones finished up his graduate work, married fellow artist, Fay Jones, and started a family. In 1960, Robert was offered a teaching position at the University of Washington School of Art, where he continued to work until he retired in 1995.  Seattle artist Robert C. Jones taught at the UW School of Art for 35 years.  He continued his daily studio practice in Seattle through his 88 years of life.

Robert C. Jones’ career spanned over 50 years, and he exhibited extensively in the pacific northwest, most notably including Cornish College of the Arts, Tacoma Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Whatcom Museum of History and Art, Museum of Northwest Art, and Hallie Ford Museum of Art. His work is included in the collections of the Seattle Art Museum, the Tacoma Art Museum, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Willamette University, Salem, OR, the Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, WA, the University of Washington, the City of Seattle Portable Works Collection, the Microsoft Art Collection, Redmond, WA and the Weyerhaeuser Collection.

In 1990, he was awarded a fellowship from Western States Arts Federation/National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2004, he received a Flintridge Foundation Award for Visual Artists. From 1969 through their close in 2013, Robert was represented and exhibited regularly in Seattle with Francine Seders Gallery. Starting in 2015, we began exhibiting new works by Jones – culminating in a joint exhibit with his wife, artist Fay Jones.
